While the Software Testing community is pretty large and wide-spread, not many offline forums have take the initiative to bring them together on one platform.

Mobile Testing (Acquisitions)

The latest to acquire or state plans of acquiring companies in the Mobile space is HP planning to take over Palm. The once-famous mobile company which was known for its stylus touchscreen phones is not a market favorite anymore.

However, with a plan to take advantage of Palm’s webOS operating system (OS) and other intellectual property, and HP’s fame of being able to compete in just about any market it enters on price, if nothing else, it certainly one acquisition the industry wont take sitting.

What’s rough news for competition is good news for the testing community. This would mean HP will spread its wings wide to make the most of the HP-Palm expertise merger. Palm has technological know-how and HP has the capability to market almost anything that comes their way. And that in turn means more opportunities and job offerings and a happy Software community.

Testing in Everyday Life

While testing is professional thing, It is a notion that you need to know programming to be able to test tools and websites.

While browsing through ‘Lifehacker.com’, I realized that there are a few very simple and overly used ways of testing, that we all skip or assume:
1. By visually comparing two tools of the same sort (for instance here the author pits browsers against each other on standard parameters – http://ow.ly/1RZyY )
2. By running user experience checks. In short do as a user would. (Well briefed at http://ow.ly/1RZJr )

However, small or big, testing essentially gives you a fair understanding of the lags in a system or process. Thus it is, today, an essential component of every products lifecycle.

How to get a better job?

While reading Indiatimes, I came across this article at Siliconindia. While I have seen most people either new to the domain or aspiring for a hike, struggle by applying in all portals seen; some smart starters, like a friend I know, start with joining a course and taking the certification. Result: he ranked among the highly paid testers in US. And needless to say, like most qualifications, software certifications do boost the self-confidence and morale of the candidate in question. It also gives the geeks, a way to tag their functional experience to industry-attested qualifiers.

While going through some job vacancies on naukri, I found proficiency in preparing Functional Test Spec, Test Reports and other documentation, as part of the expectations. Such processes are well-detailed and are a part of preparations for a good score. Certifications besides training are one of the most potent ways of increasing ones knowledge base. Moreover, Certification becomes an advantage when pitted against equally-able counterparts in recruitment processes. Thus resulting in a ego boost.

And with more than 90% respondents saying certifications are a value add, why be left behind. As wisemen say, “Why not have the advantage?”

A few days back, I did write about Testing in Everyday Life, and discussed about browser based testing done for websites by non-geeks. Just today I came across a similar cloud testing article discussing Cross Browser Cloud Testing.

Let’s see what this has to offer.

Why should we have Business Analysts in Software projects?

In organizations where no formal structure or processes exist, the Business Owners and Developers communicate directly. While the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) takes care of the technical progress internal to software development, the expectations defined by businesses is essential to be included and communicated appropriately. This is where a Business Analyst comes into the picture. He acts like the gear between the technically driven development process and the ever-expecting Business expectations, helping analyze the merits and demerits of the processes involved. A business analyst in some cases also finds out how the existing workflow can generate additional streams of revenue.

Taking a pure functional aspect of work and translating it to business understanding is a good Business Analyst’s work. Now this makes absolute Business Sense, doesn’t it?
